DRAWING CHALLENGE XIII

We are pleased to announce Yura Adams, Barbara Friedman, Dane Goodman, and Ilene Sunshine as the featured contestants of our Drawing Challenge XIII, which was inspired by "Faith - is the Pierless Bridge" (c. 1862 - 1864) by Emily Dickinson. We would like to thank the artist Carol Warner for submitting these lines.

Faith — is the Pierless Bridge
Supporting what We see
Unto the Scene that We do not —
Too slender for the eye

It bears the Soul as bold
As it were rocked in Steel
With Arms of Steel at either side —
It joins — behind the Veil

To what, could We presume
The Bridge would cease to be
To Our far, vacillating Feet
A first Necessity.

Ilene Sunshine, BG 03, 2015, 19 x 18 inches, handmade cotton and abaca paper, plastic bag fragments, acrylic aerosol paint

BG 03 is from a series of constructed drawings made with two layers of handmade paper: heavy cotton on bottom and a very thin sheet of translucent abaca on top; embedded between them are fragments of plastic bags.  After this 'sandwich' of paper and plastic glyphs has been pressed and fully dried, I add aerosol paint often just a hint, sometimes several layers - and it is this delivery of colored particles via air that yields the drawing's resolution.”
