DRAWING CHALLENGE XVII

Happy New Year!

We would like to congratulate Lisa Hess Hesselgrave, MaryKate Maher, Aga Ousseinov, and Lee Tribe for being the featured contestants of our Drawing Challenge XVII, which was inspired by Bertolt Brecht's introduction to his  Svendborg Poems (Denmark, 1939), a work composed in exile.
We would like to thank Amy Bassin for suggesting them.

We are pleased to present the works of eleven featured contestants in the accompanying virtual exhibition
Yes, there will be singing. About the dark times.

Lorraine Tady, Illumination (Lithium Sequence 1-7), 2020, mixed media on paper, 41 x 35 inches
”As I often do, I return to “unfinished drawings” when a series begins to form. This one resurfacing due to several works investigating varying tones of magenta. I have been energized by alchemical thoughts: Theosophist Thought-Forms “radiating affection”; my summer zinnias (whose color change from fresh to weathered amaze); and a (somewhat) mythological chemistry—Lithium, the leveler—turns pinkish reddish when burned with a flame (acknowledging its presence.) The diagrammatic directional lines in this work on paper suggest a striving and reaching “up and through” above the "fog" to resonate for Drawing Challenge XVII. While preparing the work for submission, I recognized a reflection of the recent convergence of Jupiter and Saturn. This was not planned but also seems appropriate for our time."
