DRAWING CHALLENGE XX

We would like to congratulate Sherri Hollaender, Gordon Fearey, Stephanie Franks, Dee Shapiro, Jennifer Viola, Kit Warren and Joni Wehrli for being the featured contestants of our Drawing Challenge XX, which was inspired by the following words by
American jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk (1917-1982).
We would like to thank the artist Philip Gerstein for suggesting these lines.

"When you look at the keyboard, all the notes are there already.
But if you mean a note enough, it will sound different.
You got to pick the notes you really mean!”

We are pleased to present the works of ten featured contestants in the accompanying virtual exhibition
All The Notes Are There Already

Gordon Fearey, Path, 2021, watercolor and gouache on Arches paper, 18 x 24 inches

”When I make a ‘path’ drawing, I usually begin on the upper right and end on the lower left. Everything that happens in between depends on calming down, drawing very slowly, and, most of all, caring. I know in advance some of my options, but the variations are infinite. By caring second by second, I find that I know what to do and that I really ‘mean it.’”

”For these large works on paper, I place the paper on the floor of my studio and I work on several of these at once. the painted gestures are made while I listen to music with strong rhythmic contrast such as Thelonious Monk’s ‘Dinah Take 1’ and ‘Dinah Take 2’. The physicality and dance-like strides that I use to make the marks with brush, spray paint and graphite are choreographed in sync with music such as Monk’s.”

“I worked on this painting for more than two years, searching for the depth of light within darkness it required.  Finally, with the weight of covid isolation surrounding me I have found that depth: I have “picked the notes you [or I] really mean.”  Made in response to the ancient Roman novel, The Golden Ass by Apuleius.”

Mark Younkle, Bum Rush, collage on record sleeves, 12 x 12 inches

”I like the quote that Philip chose by Thelonious Monk. It immediately brought to mind a series of collage that I had done using 12 x 12 in. record sleeves. The bit scraps of paper I had used in this series had to be the visual equivalent of sound. In "Bum Rush" the collaged material I selected from a wealth of scraps cohered in such a way as to suggest a propulsive force emanating from the center of the sleeve. In essence, I picked the notes I really meant!”

”It's about the rhythm of life, the awareness that life keeps percolating no matter what happens. The abstract dots are energies, feet. When deliberately chosen they make a joyful chaos.”
