DRAWING CHALLENGE XVIII

We would like to congratulate Mary Flinn, Susan Hostetler, Andrew Johnson, and John McDevitt King for being the featured contestants of our Drawing Challenge XVIII, which was inspired by the following words by the artist Grace Hartigan (1922 - 2008). We would like to thank Alice Zinnes for suggesting these lines.

"In painting, I try to make some logic out of the world that has been given to me in chaos."

We are pleased to present the works of ten featured contestants in the accompanying virtual exhibition

Philip Gerstein, Flagship, 2020, acrylic on birchwood panel, 30 x 40 inches

One of the true strengths of my work is the uniqueness of each piece. Rather than being part of some endless series, every painting that comes out of my studio sings its own special tune!

This painting uses seemingly simple means and minimal materials (in this case, 2 kinds of acrylic paint) to achieve rather non-minimal results. This intriguing effect is due to its unique use of color, but also relies upon a compositional arrangement, in which a discerning viewer might discover the echoes of Classical Ancient Chinese landscapes, one of my profound (and treasured) influences.

VENUS WEARS THE PANTS

The wind orders the world,
shuffles it like
a deck of cards.

So what if the ragged dress dances
in the wind
while Venus slips into the giant’s pants?
The dress begs for a face,
the face for a body.

We’ll walk with the wind
and run our palms
along the gritty bricks
unaware of the vivid flowers
placed within.
