Leon Polk Smith (1906-1966) was an American painter whose geometric and abstract paintings featured unconventional canvas shapes and a hard-edge style. Curving lines, colorful geometric shapes, and typically disk-shaped canvases or paper were signature aspects of his work.
Born in Chickasha, Oklahoma, Leon Polk Smith attended East Central University, Oklahoma, and Columbia University Teacher’s College, New York. His work was included in group exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum, and the Leon Polk Smith Foundation and estate preserves the artist’s legacy.
