Jason McCoy Gallery is pleased to present END OF NIGHT, an online exclusive exhibition of abstract paintings by New York-based artist Marc Van Cauwenbergh.

By drawing inspiration from urban life, END OF NIGHT pays homage to the dynamic transitions and perpetual changes it beholds. Though the theme and schedule for this exhibition had been decided several months ago, its coincidental occurrence during a time when the safety of urban existence is being tested worldwide adds an undeniably dark  undercurrent.

Developed recently but prior to the COVID-19 crisis, Van Cauwenbergh’s canvases translate as abstract renditions of the once so familiar energy on New York’s streets; the rush of its many passersby, cars and buses, all manifested as flashes of color seen from the periphery. In Van Cauwenbergh, this concentration of what sometimes could seem like frenetic animation is filtered through a precise attention to palette, speed of brushstroke, and the interplay of stacked and overlapping biomorphic shapes. Here, swathes of crisp sky-blues, mint greens, and deeply vibrant oranges for example, combine with fluctuating greys and blacks associated with pavement and constructed environs.

Pondering the ceaseless ebb and flow of the subconscious mind submerged in the hectic yet invigorating atmosphere of urban organization, Van Cauwenbergh notes: “I hope that the viewer feels encouraged to step inside the imaginary space that is outlined in each work and which seems to be in a continuous state of transition, maybe even chaos. Perhaps, it is here, while immersed in unfamiliar surroundings that a contemplation of self and meaning can become intensified.”

In the current climate, this END OF NIGHT hopes to serve as a reminder of the strength and resilience of urban energy, as well as the fact that this dark hour shall also pass.

 Stay safe, healthy and inspired!
